At a glance

  • Types: visible dye and fluorescent [confirm]
  • Finds: cracks, porosity and laps open to the surface
  • Works on: any clean, non-porous material
  • Codes: [ASME V, ISO 3452-1, ASTM E165]
  • Personnel: [ISO 9712 Level II / III]
Overview

Reveal surface cracks on any material

A liquid penetrant is applied to a clean surface and draws into any crack that is open to it. After the excess is removed, a developer pulls the penetrant back out, so the flaw shows as a clear, coloured line.

We provide PT for [oil and gas, pipeline, power, marine and fabrication] projects in Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Rwanda.

Techniques

Our penetrant systems

Visible dye

Red penetrant on a white developer, read in white light. The most common choice for field work on welds.

Fluorescent

[Penetrant that glows under UV-A light in a darkened area, for higher sensitivity on critical parts. Confirm what you offer.]

Solvent removable

Excess penetrant is wiped off with solvent, so no water or workshop is needed. Suited to on-site inspection.

What we inspect

Applications

  • Welds in stainless steel, aluminium and alloys
  • Carbon steel welds and fillet joints
  • Castings, forgings and machined parts
  • Pressure vessels, tanks and piping
  • Nozzles, branch connections and repairs
  • Leak checks on through-wall flaws [confirm]
What PT detects

Typical findings

  • Surface cracks of all kinds
  • Porosity open to the surface
  • Laps, seams and folds
  • Lack of fusion open to the surface
  • Fatigue and grinding cracks
  • Crater cracks at weld ends
How it works

Our dye penetrant process

1

Clean

Remove paint, oil, scale and spatter, then dry.

2

Apply

Apply the penetrant over the test area.

3

Dwell

Wait the time set by the procedure and temperature.

4

Remove

Remove excess penetrant from the surface.

5

Develop

Apply developer, wait, then inspect and record.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What materials can PT be used on?

Any clean, non-porous material, including stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, nickel alloys and carbon steel. It is not suited to porous materials.

Can PT find internal flaws?

No. The flaw must be open to the surface. For internal flaws we use ultrasonic testing or radiography.

How is PT different from magnetic particle testing?

MT works only on magnetic steels but can find shallow subsurface flaws. PT works on non-magnetic metals too, but finds surface-breaking flaws only.

Is PT safe on stainless steel and nickel alloys?

Yes, using materials controlled for chlorine, fluorine and sulphur content [confirm what you use], and cleaning the part afterwards.

Can you test painted or rough surfaces?

Paint and coatings must be removed first. Very rough surfaces give a heavy background, so we may recommend light grinding.

Need dye penetrant testing?

Tell us the material, the parts or welds to test and the code. We will reply with a quote and schedule.
