Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) of Tanks and Pipelines in Tanzania
Wall thickness surveys that track corrosion and remaining life, carried out to [API 653 / API 570 / ASTM E797] by [Level II / III] certified technicians.

- Measures: remaining wall thickness from the outside
- Used on: tanks, pipelines, piping, vessels
- Often possible while in service [subject to site rules]
- Codes: [API 653, API 570, ASTM E797]
- Personnel: [ISO 9712 Level II / III]
Know how much steel is left
Corrosion and erosion thin tank shells and pipes from the inside, where you cannot see it. Ultrasonic thickness testing measures the wall from the outside, with no cutting and, in many cases, no shutdown, so you can decide whether equipment is safe to keep running.
We carry out UTT for [oil and gas, pipeline, power, marine and fabrication] clients in Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Rwanda.
Applications
- Tank shell courses, roofs and nozzles
- Pipeline and plant piping at set measurement points
- Elbows, tees and reducers where wear is highest
- Pressure vessel shells and heads
- Structural steel and marine plate
- New material before it is accepted
Report findings
- Measured thickness at every location
- Minimum required thickness for the item
- Corrosion rate, when earlier readings exist
- Estimated remaining life
- Locations that need repair or closer checks
- Thickness map or drawing of the readings
How we measure
Spot gauging
A calibrated gauge and probe take readings at planned measurement points, repeated at the same points on each survey.
Grid survey
Readings on a marked grid across a shell or plate to find the thinnest area and map wall loss.
Through-coating gauging
[Measures wall thickness through paint, so coatings do not have to be stripped. Confirm what you offer.]
Our thickness testing process
Plan
Agree the measurement points, drawings, code and past readings.
Prepare
Clean each point and apply couplant, suited to surface temperature.
Calibrate
Check the gauge on a reference block before and during the job.
Measure
Take and record readings at every point.
Report
Calculate corrosion rate and remaining life, then issue a signed report.
Codes and standards we work to
| Standard | Typical use |
|---|---|
| API 653 [confirm] | Inspection and repair of aboveground storage tanks |
| API 570 / API 574 [confirm] | In-service piping inspection and inspection practices |
| ASTM E797 [confirm] | Thickness measurement by contact pulse-echo |
| ISO 16809 [confirm] | Ultrasonic thickness measurement |
| ASME B31.3 [confirm] | Process piping minimum thickness requirements |
| ISO 9712 [confirm] | Qualification and certification of NDT personnel |

Frequently asked questions
Can you measure while the tank or pipe is in service?
In many cases yes, subject to surface temperature, access and site safety rules. Tank floors need the tank to be out of service and cleaned.
How accurate is ultrasonic thickness testing?
Accuracy depends on the gauge, probe, calibration and surface condition. [State a figure such as plus or minus 0.1 mm only if you have a tested value.]
Can you measure through paint?
[With a through-coating gauge, yes. Otherwise the coating is removed at each point. Confirm what you offer.]
How often should thickness be checked?
It depends on the corrosion rate and the code. API 653 and API 570 set intervals from remaining life, so repeat readings at the same points are important.
Can spot readings miss local pitting?
Yes, single points can miss isolated pits. For pitted areas we can add a grid survey [or scanning methods; confirm] for fuller coverage.
Need thickness testing?
Tell us the tank or line, the code and the number of measurement points. We will reply with a quote and schedule.
